Papers of the Hankins family of Bacon's Castle, Surrey Co., Virginia [manuscript] 1857-1903.

Much of the material relates to the friendship of Virginia W. Hankins with Sidney Lanier and includes a draft of a reply to his marriage proposal, her memoirs of him, her commonplace book with clippings regarding him, a letter to her from his future wife, May Day, and an autographed copy of his book Tiger lilies. The collection also contains the school notebook, 1857, of James Dewitt Hankins, a diary, 1866, regarding the lumber business, & two voyages to New York, and an amnesty oath.

Sidney Lanier was a noted Southern poet and composer, born in Macon, Georgia, on Feb. 3, 1842. He graduated from Oglethorpe University and voluntarily fought for the Confederacy as a member of the 2nd Battalion Infantry (Georgia), and the Signal Corps. It is likely that Lanier contracted tuberculosis during his stay at at Union prison camp, and the complications from that disease would affect Lanier his entire life. After the war, Lanier worked as a tutor and headmaster at an academy in Alabama ...
